About 1,300 engineers firemen and brakemen on the Big Four quit at midnight in Joliet in protest of troops around the yards. The local strike was ordered by Charles C. Day of the Eastern division. No disorders reported. It is unclear if national officers approved the action.
Twenty five thousand striking railway shop crafts in the New York district telegraphed Washington via David Williams urging rejection of President Harding's proposal to submit the seniority issue to the railroad labor board. The message defends the strike, condemns foreign labor use, and calls for government action to prove real Americanism.
The 40th annual session of district grand lodge No. 7 of the G W O of O F, a Negro fraternal group, convened at First Baptist Negro church with 500 delegates from lodges statewide. A parade led by the Patriarchate, floats and dress uniforms drew large crowds along Main Street. Officers and visitors spoke on civic welfare, urging temperance, industriousness, and lawful conduct. The order now claims over 2,700 members with total endowment receipts of $199,544.14.
Six companies of the Illinois national guard were trained this morning for Joliet where engineers and firemen have struck. Officers were unsure if troops would be removed or expanded. Brotherhood workers refuse to work under troop protection.
Chief executives of the four transportation craft unions telegraphed members to avoid company property if lives are in danger. Warren S. Stone of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers warned that 100 similar cases would follow unless yard and shop conditions improve. He stated workers are not required to endure abusive guards and dangerous conditions.
Clerks freight handlers and station men not on strike were ordered to avoid their usual workplaces where life may be in danger from armed guards or defective equipment, a brotherhood statement said to the Associated Press in Cincinnati.
In Cleveland on August 9 W G G Lee head of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Trainmen and D B Robertson head of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen concur with President Stone's stance on the Joliet walkout after being informed of the situation.
Mrs. Edith Vanderbilt of Biltmore, president of the North Carolina State Fair association, is expected to speak at the fourth annual convention of the North Carolina state department of the American Legion in Greensboro on September 19, according to a Greensboro report.
Local freight agent S. O. Schaub reports rail officials say Southern accepts president and union chair proposals. Strikers refuse return nationwide, insisting conditions be settled nationwide. Officials vow unimpaired transportation service while maintaining seniority rights for returning workers.

Newbern Aug 9 reports say Onslow County was quiet today after warnings of race trouble following an attack on Cy Jones a rural mail carrier. Four negroes were arrested and moved to Wilmington jail. A lodge leader alleged to have incited the attack was reportedly shot near Swansboro but confirmation was lacking. Authorities say a mob ordered the suspect to leave the county. lynching is not believed to have occurred.
L. W. Jones of Princeton University photographed his 17 year old daughter Elizabeth as she slipped on a geological survey stone and fell into the Merced river in Yosemite Valley. Rangers recovered the body last night. Elizabeth Jones planned to enter Wellesley College this fall.
In Sayville New York Josiah Smith 95 was attacked by a swarm when a nest was broken in his garden. His daughter used a broom to knock him down and sweep away the bees saving his life. Doctors report his condition is critical but improving.
Pinch Lost Girl Virginia Stone an 11 year old from Columbus Ohio was found by two men and others searching near Inlet three miles from her entry point. She was wet hungry exhausted but unharmed.
Winston Salem youths await the YMCA Camp Rotary at High Rock planned for late August. The camp is supervised by the YMCA and open to all city boys whether or not they belong to the organization. A number have already registered for the camp.
Friends report the death of Gaither M Swink age 29 at a local hospital after an illness with typhoid fever. He is survived by his widow and three children. The body was moved to W. E. Swain’s home near Spring Hill. Funeral services are set for tomorrow at 11 at Spring Hill church with Rev. Smoot. interment in the church cemetery.
New Bern August 9 Pamlico county shipped its second hog shipment for cooperative marketing. Two carloads totaling 1206 head were sent, with plans for another shipment within the next few days.
Bishop John Kilgo remained unconscious and reported in a practically unchanged but weakening condition at his home late today. Physicians warned he might be growing weaker and not improving.
Kiwanians at a luncheon unanimously support Dr. I T Mann for state commander of the American Legion. The sentiment began in Asheville and gained statewide backing after talks by Kiwanian Kirkman who spoke on the Toronto International conference. The meeting featured introductions, practical community service talk, and a plan to enforce attendance rules with four consecutive absences leading to removal.
Union leaders moved to conclude the soft coal strike settlement with operators gathered for a peace conference in Cleveland. Operators expect an agreement affecting most Ohio mines and others in Illinois Indiana and Pennsylvania with final say by the union policy committee and John L Lewis reportedly holding assurances of broader support for a one-agreement approach.
Official figures show the Yiddish and Hebrew group leading New York City foreign-born whites with 946 139 people. Italians follow at 803 048, English and Celtic 897 452, Germans 690 788, Russians 221 163, Poles 161 310. The Italian group had the fastest growth in the decade to 1920, rising nearly 50 percent.
Four freight cars derailed at Jamestown last night delaying train No. 29 six hours to reach here at 12:45 a m. Train No. 31 also delayed and arrived at High Point at 6:50 this morning. Cause not learned by local station this morning.
A $10,000 damage suit was filed against Highland Park Manufacturing after a swimming pool used by employees was deemed dangerous for children. Seven year old William Bell, son of employee Mrs Stella Bell, drowned in the pool several weeks ago.
