In Oak Hill ten miles north of Idabel two peace officers Constable W. D. Wilmoth and Deputy Sheriff Jasper Whitten were shot and seriously wounded during an attempted arrest of an automobile thief. They were rushed to a Paris Texas hospital.
James Ayling and Leonard Reid launched the Trail of the Caribou in Wasaga Beach Ont to chase the world long distance flight record. They head toward Baghdad Iraq on a non stop 6500 mile-plus attempt, carrying six hundred gallons of petrol and four days of provisions. Reid 36 and Ayling 29 bring a twin engined biplane with no radio and registrations G ACJM.
An explosion on the eighteenth floor of a 45 Christopher Street apartment building injures several people. One woman is reported in a dying condition according to police.
In Santiago Cuba on August eight the army seized control following a wave of Communist disturbances. One soldier was gravely wounded when troops dispersed a demonstration in front of a shoe factory that had halted production due to a strike.

Wilkesboro August 8 The jury selection for the murder trial of Leoda Childress a 20 year old foster relative in the hill country courthouse continued with eight jurors chosen from Yadkin county and four more to be added from a second venue. The defendants Warwick W Tilley 60 his wife 58 Luther 32 Clyde 18 and Minerva 30 sat unmoved through the process as courtroom crowds watched. Indications were that the trial would unfold after further juror selection.
President Roosevelt travels the Mississippi Valley to inspect federal dam and irrigation projects and discuss population redistribution hopes. He visits Rochester to honor Mayo brothers then moves to Winona for dam work, with mediators at work on Minnesota labor unrest as Shipstead and Holdale loom in state race.
