CIA Profits From Front Operations Revealed
CIA Director William E Colby told the House intelligence committee the agency made profits from Air America and a CIA pension fund. Air America is being disposed of while the fund operates with profits turned to the Treasury since 1973. Colby said most proprietaries were unprofitable but some were large. He defined proprietaries as commercial fronts controlled by the agency. The pension fund covers trusts annuities and insurance to keep sensitive activities discreet. Colby noted profits were previously kept and used to reduce appropriations, but later profits go to the Treasury. A Pentagon official cited a split over whether Egyptian troop movements indicated maneuvers or an attack. Hall refused to confirm if CIA was one of the two agencies involved.
