Butz considers changes to flue-cured tobacco pricing
Agriculture Secretary Earl Butz may raise the 1975 crop price formula for loan redemption and will convene the USDA Tobacco Advisory Committee before August. He will review supply demand outlook for possible 1976 quota changes. About 40 percent of auction sales have gone to the Stabilization Corp, up from 6 percent last year. Tobacco markets briefly closed in Lumberton, Whiteville, and surrounding warehouses as growers petitioned for market closures until prices cover production costs and a fair profit. They also urged investigations of buying practices by tobacco companies for possible price fixing.
