Soap Bought Faster Than It Is Manufactured
Americans have been buying soap this year faster than it has been manufactured under government restrictions. Purchases run at 1 832 000 000 pounds annually, about 90 percent of the 1940-41 average. Manufacturers are limited to 80 percent of fats and oils used for soap due to wartime shortages, creating regional shortages as stocks from 1941 were drawn down. Officials urge limiting purchases to immediate needs and have discounted rationing outcomes.
