A truck driven by Sam Montgomery of this city crashed into a bridge about ten miles south of High Point on the Asheboro road. The front end was demolished and Montgomery was pinned in the cab, requiring the truck to be moved to free his body.
Samuel M. Montgomery 24 father died when the truck he was driving crashed into a bridge abutment two and a half miles below Glenora on the Asheboro road. He lived at 709 Centennial Ave High Point and was bringing watermelons when the crash occurred around 4 20 this morning. A. A. Fouts of High Point found the body pinned in the wreckage and a Koonce ambulance later released him but he was dead on removal. The accident followed a near demolition of his grocery store on Farlow Street ten days earlier and occurred at the same spot where another High Pointer was fatally injured years ago.
Spanish government troops repelled an insurgent attack against Sort as a forest fire spread over a ten mile front in western Catalonia. Readers in New York observed a reversed headline joke on the Post front page about turning a page and reading backward.
A ferocious grizzly broke from a steel barred cage in Highland Park and terrorized nearby homes until it was shot and killed near a reservoir five hours after its escape today.
Raleigh report says Pat Bryant and Roy Allen, two escaped inmates, were arrested at Hamlet. Oscar Pitts, penal division supervisor, confirmed the capture today.
The War Department reported three Army Flying Fortress bombers flew from Miami to Colombia in just over eight hours, covering 1 540 miles without stopping arrival recorded at 11 27 am E S T.
Four slight earthquakes were felt in diverse parts of Los Angeles County with no damage. The first tremor appeared off the Southern California coast. Two jostled dishes and homes in Huntington Beach. The fourth was felt in the southwest district of Los Angeles, Inglewood, the Wilshire district, and Beverly Hills.
Three men held up First National Bank of Woodriver outside the post office today. Two were armed with submachine guns and grabbed 35 000 to 40 000 dollars from assistant cashier Ralph Welsh who had gone to fetch a Federal Reserve mail shipment from St Louis and Chicago.
Sidney O. Clapp of High Point filed for divorce from Blanch M. Clapp in Greensboro Superior Court. The couple married July 25 1923 and reportedly separated June 19 1987 with the action grounded on statutory grounds.
Former Sheriff Lee Combs was killed and his brother Lewis Combs campaign chairman for Gov. Chandler was critically wounded in a stairway shooting during a Breathitt county precinct meeting. Sheriff Walter Deaton was wounded in the arm as four or more shots were fired. The inquest was ordered and state officers were dispatched to the scene as details of Saturday's Democratic primary race emerged.
Love letters by Barbara Carroll to Paul Dwyer were read at the trial of her father former Deputy Sheriff Francis M. Carroll for the murder of Dr. James G. Littlefield. The letters claim she was seduced by Carroll and hint at Dr. Littlefield's knowledge of the affair.

City Manager E M Knox predicted full pressure would return sometime during the night as the 24 inch main from the filtration plant to Prospect Street burst causing a two fold water shortage to become three fold. Officials blamed public alarm and conservation for the low nine to nineteen pound pressures.
Jimmy Godwin under four hours of questioning confessed to robbery and assault spanning North and South Carolina, blaming alcohol and marijuana. He implicated Sam Kellam who denied involvement, as a 17 year old girl linked to the case was returned to Carthage with her father. Kellam faces burglary charges after being arrested following the high profile assault on Dr James M Godwin.
Sam Kantor and Robert Myers who run the North Main street Jockey Club were arrested this afternoon on two warrants each charging gambling and operating a nuisance. The warrants followed a complaint of $350 allegedly fleeced from W. D. Loving of Greensboro. The club reportedly accepts bets on races in other states, a practice courts have ruled not illegal.
Cool and brash Douglas Corrigan rode triumphantly up lower Broadway as sweltering crowds cheered his solo flight from New York to Dublin. He rode in an open car with aides, while supporters and Irish flags filled streets from the Battery to City Hall in a victory welcome recalling Lindbergh’s tribute.
Jack Garrett of High Point defeats Ralph Miner 2 up in morning play at the first annual Carolinas match open. Benny Goodes of Burlington dominates Jimmy Crichton 4 and 3. Semifinals set Owens vs Webb and Garrett vs Goodes at Emerywood Country Club.
Rome reports a boiler explosion in the Italian cruiser Quarto at Pollenza Mallorca killed 15 sailors and left 20 injured. Seven died instantly, eight later in Palma hospital. The ship, built in 1912, remains largely undamaged and has served in Spanish waters for 18 months.
At Desoto National Forest Mississippi on August 5 a Brown invading force challenged Blue defenders near New Orleans and the lower Mississippi. The 65th Cavalry Brigade led a seven mile advance crossing Red Creek using improvised bridges while both sides reinforced for the mass battle. Prisoners were taken and returned, with one Brown observation plane reportedly shot down at 700 feet during recon.
