Newton Iowa August 4 union members capitulated to Gov Kraschel demand and entered the Maytag plant at noon to restart operations. About 100 members filed in between guardsmen joining an equal number of back-to workers, with a continuous stream entering both plant entrances as A H Taylor the factory superintendent said the washing machine factory would begin running again.

Florence Aug 4 AP Growers at opening tobacco sales in 16 border belt towns of the Carolinas reported prices near 30 cents a pound, about last year. Some markets set opening day records while complaints about crop allotments under the new law arose at several markets including Timmonville where prices ranged 22 to 32 cents. Mullins estimated 1.5 million pounds offered with 1 million expected to sell today, prices 5 to 30 cents for lower primings and 30 to 60 cents for better grades. Lake City offerings near 1.4 million pounds with prices 10 to 25 cents, average 26. Fairmont reported the heaviest offerings in history with an average near 27 cents. Conway estimated early hours at 23 cents with a top 68 cents. Lumberton paid about 25 cents on ten piles.

CHICAGO Aug 4 H A Enochs chairman of the carriers joint conference committee announced conferences with 18 railroad brotherhoods over a 15 percent wage cut had ended and he would seek the national mediation board. A similar decision was reached by the deadlocked carriers and Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen in separate talks.
