Visitors to Purgatory Mountain Zoo loom large on Asheboro scene
Asheboro braces for growth as interim Purgatory Mountain Zoo draws 4000 plus weekend visitors. With July crowds over 10 000, officials warn town lacks eateries and hotels while plans for a new inn and revamping downtown linger. Signs directing motorists to the zoo are scarce and road access remains primitive. Travelers are urged to bring lunches and plan ahead for lodging.
