Consumer Bill Vote Sought By Backers
Washington AP supporters of a bill to create an independent consumer protection agency plan a third push to end Senate debate and bring it to a vote. Led by Percy and Ribicoff, backers hope for a two thirds vote to end a filibuster by Allen and conservatives, with a fourth attempt possible. The agency would identify consumer interests and advocate them before federal courts or agencies. Debate shows rift over whether federal voices speak for consumers amid opposition from Nixon and business groups. Knauer backs the bill, consumer groups and labor unions support it.
