Air Guard and Reserve alert for possible active duty
The Air Force alerted 28,000 Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve members in 28 states plus the District of Columbia for possible active duty as part of a defense buildup after President Kennedy signed legislation authorizing up to 250,000 reservists. About 700 aircraft, including 100 transports, would be involved. 5,000 more personnel may be recruited to reach full strength. The advisory notice targets 64 units across 28 states and reserves, with some bases remaining active to support B47 bombers. Skiing now attracts about 4 million Americans each winter.
