A large force of deputies and state patrol men drove off about 100 armed strikers at the Conestee mill area near Greenville. No injuries were reported and the mill resumed operations after the clash.
Ten year old Bernice Hoffman daughter of Mr and Mrs R J Hoffman of Beaumont Texas was shot and fatally wounded at a tourist camp near Hot Springs Ark an unidentified prowler who tried to enter the cabin occupied by the Hoffmans opened fire authorities said the incident occurred early today
President Roosevelt sails off the U S coast aboard the cruiser New Orleans en route to Astoria Oregon. Houston and Orleans cruise along the Oregon coast and head toward the Columbia River as part of a historic voyage. He will debark in Portland Friday morning and then proceed by country train to the Bonneville project in Washington and on to Glacier National.
PROUTS NECK Me Aug 2 AP The future of Germany without Hindenburg will be set by Chancellor Hitler’s ability to tackle economic and foreign policy problems. Dr Jacob Gould Schurman American ambassador to Germany 1925 30 said the Hitler regime did not face imminent collapse though foreign affairs difficulties loom beyond Hitler.
States forecast cloudy with possible showers through Friday. Coastal waters from Gandy Hook to Hatteras expect moderate to fresh southerly winds and overcast conditions with occasional showers tonight and Friday. From Hatteras to Jacksonville winds mainly south to southwest with similar overcast and probable showers overnight and Friday.
In New Orleans on August 2, state tax commissioners under Senator Huey P. Long appointed statewide tax assessors to override the city board after Mayor Walmsley refused Gov. Allen’s appointees. National Guard forces seized the registration office as Rankin announced districts would have state assessors, with two exceptions.
In New Orleans on August 2 Mayor T Semmes Walmsley moved extra officers and arms to city offices while Senator Huey P Long displayed his state guard presence. Walmsley’s police count rose to 1 400 with 500 additional men as Governor Allen ordered troopers to raid vice districts non violently, amid a heated pre primary clash between Long and Walmsley.
Paris officials expressed condolences to Germany over the death of President Von Hindenburg, while warning that Hitler’s regime could threaten European peace. Key leaders sent messages to Berlin and aides delivered condolences at the German embassy as France mourned Marshal Lyautey and recalled past Franco German animosities.
In Atlanta on August 2 entrants in the national balloon elimination race were updated. The Navy entry landed six miles southeast of Commerce, Georgia after night navigation. Army No. 1 came down near Monticello, Georgia with pilots Captain William Flood and Lieutenant Gillespie.
Raleigh reports the state relief administration sent Ottawa Washington an order for 5,695 additional cattle to aid drought stricken midwest recovery. The total cattle ordered for North Carolina reaches 30,665 with a state allotment of 756,000 cattle.
United States Senator Park Trammell of Florida, recently renominated in the Democratic primary, honeymooned today with his bride Beatrice Mesmer following their wedding last night in Lakeland.
Rome reports Italy received news that Hitler succeeded to the German presidency with calm lines. Italian officials defended that the German people had a right to act as they wish and offered no comment while Musso would send condolences if needed. Italians lauded Von Hindenburg as a great war leader, mourning his death and questioning Germany’s future unity. Official notification of Hindenburg’s death had not yet reached Rome.
Von Hindenburg, Germany’s field marshal and president, died at his Neudeck estate aged advanced in life. Four state physicians and family were at his bedside as his health failed after a gland disorder. The Reich’s flag flew at half staff and the town mourned the loss of a trusted national figure.

A nationwide plebiscite is ordered for August 19 and the Reichswehr swears obedience to Hitler with a new oath. Funeral plans and nationwide mourning are outlined as Germany shifts to Nazi leadership.
