Weekend Accidents Claim 18 Tar Heels

The Associated Press reports 18 fatalities across North Carolina from weekend accidents. Five killed when a car overturned and burst into flames near Hamlet. two drowned near Henderson. a Fort Bragg soldier killed near Boiling Springs. a Warrenton area crash. a Wrightsville Beach drowning. and several other fatal incidents including a two car collision near Albemarle and a fatal gun duel aftermath in the county.

Vaccine distribution planned for children five to nine

Private physicians and public health agencies will begin receiving Salk vaccine this month for children ages five to nine. The Public Health Service allocated 846000 doses, to be shared with states based on 5-9 year olds not yet in the free program. More vaccine will follow as production continues and regulators approve it.

Lost Children Identified in Baltimore and Wilmington

Mary Lawler of New York identified Veronica Connolly eight and her brother George two as the abandoned children found in Baltimore and Wilmington. Both children were located days apart, with Veronica in a downtown 5 and 10 store in Baltimore and George later found at the Episcopal Cathedral of St. John in Wilmington. Details of their background are withheld at the request of New York police conducting a criminal investigation.
