Two-Principal Concept Stalls on Board Debate
High Point Board of Education debates a two-principal plan for junior and senior highs with separate administration and curriculum chiefs. State law emphasises a single principal as chief, causing a tie vote and calls to table. Proponents cite improved focus and cost savings, while concerns linger over legality and logistics.
No New Schools In City's Future
High Point will not need new schools in the 1970s. A state survey for the Board of Education recommends renovating Ferndale and Griffin junior highs and Central High while razing William Penn High School. Community recreation space would replace the Penn grounds. Enrollment is expected to fall from about 10,300 to under 9,000 by 1980, with birth rates declining.
