Dependent Deferments Near Elimination Debated in Senate
Washington April 30 Senator Johnson of Colorado urged that dependency as a deferment cause in military service could be removed with Congress approving a bill. He pressed for cost estimates and impact data before moving the measure. War and Navy witnesses testified many with dependents already serve and more would be drafted if aid is approved. The plan would classify wives and children as dependents, deduct $20 monthly from lower grade pay, add $20 from the government, totaling $40 per month, plus $10 per child.
