Officials Seek War Item Conversions For Local Industry
City Manager E M Knox and Mayor Arthur Kirkman traveled to Washington to explore converting High Point furniture plants to war production. Knox may stay a month to study potential conversions with War Production Board officials. Hosiery workers and factory floors could be redirected to airplane parts, while existing conversions are insufficient to stabilize the region. Southern hosiery manufacturers press for war assembly work to employ skilled workers and idle space amid ongoing negotiations.
