High Point Enterprise (Newspaper) - April 28, 1974, High Point, North Carolina A High Point Enterprise sunday april 28, 1974 mental health group slates member drive Max Meeks furniture executive and radio personality has been named honorary chairman of the High Point mental health membership drive which begins May i to correspond with National mental health month the High Point mental health assn., with offices at 202 Boulevard was founded in 1967 As a Volunteer Agency to represent the citizens inter Erstin mental health. The purpose of the Agency is three fold i a to improve attitudes toward mental illness and the mentally ill i a to improve services for the mentally ill 3 a to work for the prevention of mental illness and for the promotion of mental health in order to educate the Community and increase Public awareness the association has established a speakers Bureau to provide programs for civic groups and schools. A weekly radio program May be heard Over mfr at 9 15 each wednesday morning. Direct Aid is provided for patients at Umstead Hospital and l. Richardson psychiatric unit through operation Santa Claus. Gifts Are supplied at Christmas time for patients from Guilford county. Patients without family Are remembered throughout the year. A picnic for Umstead patients is planned for april 30, at the High Point City Lake. The association sponsors the Phoenix club a rehabilitation club which aids the patient with his reentry into the Active Community. Since the beginning of the year the association has initiated an arts and crafts program in two area nursing Homes participated in an extensive mental health Survey to evaluate needs in the High Point schools planned Post orientation programs for prospective first Grade parents and is in the process of planning a parental effectiveness training session which will be open to the Public. Officers currently serving the association Are mrs. Kenneth b. Geddie jr., president or. Bernard Fitzgerald vice president mrs. Harold Leach Secretary and. John c. Pierce treasurer. Mrs. Fred a. Thomas Iii is employed As executive director. Chair City Jaycees install officers Thomasville new officers of the Thomasville Jaycees were installed saturday night at a banquet that featured a speech by the governors Legal aide Fred Morrison. Morrison a former resident of Thomasville and past president of the North Carolina Jaycees reviewed the need for citizens to become involved in the electoral process. He urged increased voter registration suggested that people become acquainted with elected officials and emphasized the importance of a big voter turnout. The officers installed during the banquet were Don Ferguson president George Abernathy first vice president Donald Cranford second vice president j. W. Mathis state director Frank Green recording Secretary Milton Mccaskill corresponding Secretary Charles Cranford treasurer and John Todd and Bill Wilson directors. In a special presentation following the installation of officers. Ben Maree was presented the Junior chamber International senator ship an award Given for service to the Jaycee organization. Bulldog inventor Bill Pickett a Black Cowboy known As a the Dusky Demon a is credited with inventing the sport of Bull dogging. He died in 1932 and has been installed in the Cowboy Hall of Fame Oklahoma City.
