Martin Madden veteran Illinois congressman dies of a heart attack at his office in Washington. He was 72 or 73, chair of the appropriations committee and a stalwart for Coolidge policies. House adjourns in respect and Madden will be buried in Hinsdale Illinois.
The Bremen crew arrives at Curtiss Field at 1 48 p m with the Ford relief plane dropping in from Greenly Island at 1 45. Reporters and photographers mainly gathered at Mitchel Field. The relief plane headed to Washington to honor Floyd Bennett, who died while aiding the flyers. A crowd-avoidance impression lingered as observers note past Mitchel Field ceremonies.
Two famed air teams reach Washington today, Floyd Bennett and the German Irish trans Atlantic fliers. Bennett dies of pneumonia while aiding fellow airmen and will be buried at Arlington near Rear Admiral Peary. Washington April 27 The Senate Finance Committee finished revising the house tax reduction bill cutting the total from 290 million to 203 million and delaying until Monday to review a print. Chairman Smoot plans to push the measure next Thursday with possible delay of the Boulder Canyon dam bill. Senate leaders expect passage within a week to ten days.
Deputy Sheriff Lonnia Morgan traveled to Burnsville to fetch a man matching the description of E K Reynolds, a Durham logger wanted for the Christmas Eve fatal slashing of 12 year old Alvin Cothran who aided his mother during the attack.
Franklin Hatcher, 16, shot and mortally wounded Handy Hatcher nine miles from Fayetteville after the latter, drunken and enraged, attempted to kill the wife and daughter. A coroner's jury exonerated the youth in Fayetteville today.
Lieut. General Alessandro Guidoni, former Italian air attache in Washington, was killed at Monticello flying field when his parachute failed to open after a jump. Pilot Lieut. Fierri said the general may have jumped too quickly, winding the ropes and preventing the canopy from deploying. This was the first failure of this parachute type in over 2,000 launches.
Senate and House clash over the Mississippi River flood control bill with a conference called to resolve differences. President Coolidge sent a memorandum outlining objections to the house amendments, and Senator Jones conferred with General Jadwin on the matter for conferees.
London April 27 final approval of the revised prayer book measure passed at a church assembly special session. The measure now goes to the House of Commons for acceptance or rejection. Vote totals 396 for and 153 against with bishops 32 2, clergy 183 59, laity 181 192.
Ernest M. North assistant general passenger of the Atlantic Coast Line railway is seriously ill in a Savannah hospital with double pneumonia.
Powerful windstorms and torrential rains hit southern Georgia, flooding rivers and damaging property. A tornado damaged buildings near Waycross, and Valdosta received 2.5 inches of rain as floodwaters rose on the Alapaha and Withlacoochee rivers. West Bainbridge residents prepared to evacuate as the Flint rose seven feet above flood stage.
Raleigh April 27 Dean I O Schaub of State College agricultural school announced free distribution of four publications for North Carolina farmers. The guides cover apple spraying, swine feeding, lamb production costs, and egg production costs.
College journalism students and campus editors convene at Duke University for a three day session of the 15th semi annual press meeting. The program includes technical talks round tables dances and theater parties. Oscar Coffin head of UNC journalism will address delegates Saturday morning.

At Arlington National Cemetery a lone grave digger, claiming to be a friend of Floyd Bennett, offered to help prepare the grave for Bennett’s body. He refused to reveal his name, filled the grave with dirt, spoke of the end, then climbed out and left the site.
About fifty young men and women from Collegiate Y M C A and Y W C A groups attend the annual training course starting at Duke University. O R Magil, executive secretary of the national Y M C A student division, is the principal speaker. A full program begins the week with a busy schedule ahead.
