A 3:25 am blaze in the Neal hotel spread to the Elks auditorium and Chatham building on Liberty street, causing nearly 87 thousand in loss. Leon E. Mitchell, a Winston printing employee from High Point, is missing and feared dead. searches continue as a heavy downtown fire damages multiple businesses.
Fire at the Neal hotel on Liberty Street caused about 90000 in damage with 51800 insured. The Hutchins Pharmacy building and the Elks club and auditorium were damaged. Several guests escaped unharmed. Rev. W H McGuire visiting from Pennsylvania lost 460 in cash and a 1500 stereoscopic outfit. Origin of the fire undetermined.
Across the western battle line signs of growing activity appear from the Vosges southward to the Verdun area. Verdun continues with vigorous artillery fire as a small French counterattack north of Vaux near Verdun is repelled. In Lorraine reconnaissance tests the German side probes the French lines while north of the Aisne German patrols are checked by a hand grenade. Two Russian hydro aeroplanes raided Constantinople via Athens.
Raleigh April 27 The state Democratic convention gathered at noon with Senator Simmons as temporary chairman. He delivered a lengthy address on state and national affairs, urging Democrats to work for the party. Delegates were elected with no firm adjournment time set, and the party eyed Simmons Overman Craig and Carr as the likely national delegates. Secretary Daniels plans a retirement, with A W McLean viewed as successor.
More than two hundred women from NC clubs gather in High Point for the annual Federation of Woman's Clubs meeting opening Tuesday night. The event features executive board sessions, conferences, and public night sessions at a remodeled auditorium. Wesley Memorial church hosts day sessions for delegates.
City Physician H W McCain reported a smallpox census shows six homes with disease and under 20 total cases. No victims were in serious condition and officials say the illness appears to be waning with vaccinations and precautions to prevent further spread.
London reports the sinking of the Norwegian bark Carmanian by gunfire from a German submarine. A boat with part of the crew capsized and a British cruiser was torpedoed. The Carmanian measured 184 tons gross.
The annual state council of the Sons and Daughters of Liberty held in Winston yesterday chose High Point to host the spring 1917 convention. Invitations were presented but the High Pointers’ appeal secured the win for the city.
Lieutenant William L. Armstrong elected second lieutenant of Company M with appointment contingent on examination. Examining board named including Capt. Dallas Zollicoffer of Company M First Lieutenant Hiatt from the medical department and Capt. Case of the coast artillery.
Lenoir County coroner Stanley of Wayne county postponed the inquest into Leon Ed wards death alleged to be caused by Hyman Epstein. The hearing is rescheduled for Saturday and the coroner refused to comment in the interim.
Officers of the grand lodge and grand council of the Royal Arcanum were elected. Regent is Dr. Rufus L. Allen of Waynesville and grand vice regent is Dr. John E. Ray of Raleigh. Asheville chosen as the next meeting place.
Partly overcast and continued cold weather tonight and Friday. Frost likely in mountain district tonight. Moderate northwest winds expected.
London reports admissions that the Irish revolutionary movement has extended martial law beyond Dublin. Premier Asquith warned of a serious spread to western regions as fighting rages in streets, with Major General Sir John Maxwell granted plenary powers to enforce order.
James W. Gerard, the American ambassador, will depart Berlin for the German army headquarters to be received by the emperor. Chancellor Bethmann Hollweg, already at headquarters, is expected in Berlin tomorrow to craft Germanys reply to the latest American note.
Berlin reports the British submarine K-22 was sunk by German naval forces on April 25. The German admiralty says two crew were rescued and captured, and adds a German submarine was hit by a torpedo from a British cruiser the same day.
Professor J Henry Highsmith of Forest College spent last night in High Point and this morning traveled by car to Liberty Piedmont School to deliver the commencement address.
The health of Miss Neppe Whitaker and Mrs Corrina Best of Thomasville, aunts of Miss I Irvin Paylor, who was admitted to High Point hospital last week, remains about the same.

Bird S Coler of New York and G M L Frine of Philadelphia visit High Point today. Coler, president of the Carolina and Yadkin River railroad and the North Carolina Public Service company, will inspect both lines and spend several days reviewing interests in High Point Greensboro and Salisbury.
Rev. Sylvester Newlin departed yesterday for Washington D C to attend the National Missionary convention now in session there. Rev. A G Dixon is also in attendance, having left earlier on an extended trip.
The Greensboro district of the Western North Carolina Methodist Conference opened with Dr. J. H. Weaver delivering the opening sermon. Morning sessions featured varied programs on spiritual state, revival planning, finances, and church service. About 40 to 50 preachers and 80 churches are represented and the conference runs through Saturday afternoon.
