Madden shifts on flood bill amid White House objections

In Washington on April 24 Chairman Madden announced he has withdrawn opposition to the Senate Jones flood control bill while President Coolidge still objects to certain provisions. Coolidge favors costs kept by the federal government for spillways and levee work but resists rights of way and land payments. Tilson predicts a possible presidential veto if damage provisions aren’t revised. Reid plans an amendment to have the federal government buy land rights in floodways.

Floyd Bennett Fighting For Life In Quebec

Floyd Bennett the American aviator famed for the 1926 north pole flight is gravely ill with lobar pneumonia at Jeffrey Hale hospital in Quebec. His wife rushed to his bedside and is hospitalized with bronchitis. Bennett arrived at Murray Bay last Friday as pilot of the Ford relief plane for German fliers at Greenly Island after leaving Detroit.

Rainey Faces Trial for Bennett Bank Robbery

Will Rainey of Reidsville goes on trial in Pittsboro for participation in the January 7 holdup of the People's Bank and Trust in Bennett. Three robbers escaped with 3 657 dollars. Rainey pleads not guilty and claims alibi but witnesses identify him as one of the trio. He was the only man arrested.

Washington April 24 Supporters of the senate flood control bill won again in the house adopting an amendment that the federal government pay for acquiring flowage rights in spillway and floodway areas. An amendment by Rep Tilson to settle flood way damages in federal court failed 119 to 67.

Boiler room accident at Cannon Mills fatally burns man

In Kan napolis Cannon Mills boiler room valves blew open sending live steam through the room. Arthur Thompson 39 died at a local hospital with two others injured. R E Daney and Guy Orr suffered burns. Thompson survived by widow, daughter and parents.

Floyd Bennett, who contracted pneumonia during a relief flight to the disabled Bremen, rests somewhat more comfortably but very low this morning. The bulletin from Jeffery Hale hospital reports both Mr and Mrs Bennett as patients through the day.

Boy Struck With Milk Bottle in Guilford City

Everett Bryant 14 lay in Guilford General Hospital in serious condition after being struck over the head with a milk bottle by Howard Nunn. A warrant was issued for Nunn on assault with a deadly weapon. The incident occurred near English Street Grocery in the West End shortly before 4 pm. Bryant was brought by Yow's ambulance in an unconscious state with a convulsion after arrival.

In Pittsboro on April 24, C E Jones and Frank Scott of Bennet were acquitted by a jury of charges tied to an automobile theft ring after two and a half hours of deliberation. Judge C C Lyon of Elizabeth Town was to sentence five co defendants who pleaded guilty: Ben, Boyd and Larkin, Presnell, J C Talman and Edward Barber.

Republicans Cut Tax Reduction Plan in Senate Finance
