Treasury plan would raise revenue with tax changes
The proposal adds 6 percent to the existing 24 percent corporate tax and lowers exemptions from the excess profits tax. It estimates $933.5 million in extra revenue from those changes. Reducing estate tax exemptions and adjusting tax brackets could yield $353 million. Boosted tobacco and liquor taxes would bring in about $393 million, with all other excises totaling $842.6 million. The plan aims to raise $3.6 billion more, potentially placing some individuals paying seven times their 1940 income tax in 1941. Descriptions assume earned income with 10 percent earned income credit and standard exemptions.
