Brush Fire Burns Across 125 Acres Near Lexington and Thomasville

A large brush and woods fire burned about 125 acres along and across the Southern Railroad tracks between Lexington and Thomasville yesterday. About 300 people, including 150 volunteer firefighters from five rural departments, fought shifting winds, set backfires, and plowed fire breaks under forest ranger direction. The blaze, possibly the Davidson County area’s largest in years, started near a passing train and raged from 4 p.m. to nearly 8 p.m., threatening homes and knocking out telegraph poles while crews used pine seedling barriers to beat the flames.
