Paris reports fading hopes for a quick reparations settlement as German delegate Schacht leaves for Berlin to consult the cabinet. Experts expect no lower terms and foresee reports of failure within a week, with Schacht authorized to push higher offers if needed.
Troops to be withdrawn from the Gastonia strike area by Sunday night with orders possibly issuing for Charlotte units to depart early Sunday and the Gastonia company to return to Charlotte. Judge Townsend and Adjutant General Van Metts say the danger is over and withdrawal is likely tomorrow. no parade will be held as planned by the National Textile Workers Union.
Troy Jones husband of Loray mill striker Violet Jones faced arrest after drawing a stick of dynamite at a Gastonia mass meeting and vowing to blow up the crowd. He filed a $5,000 suit against Fred Beal organizer for the National Textile Workers Union alleging Beal aided in his wife’s abduction.

Snow Lake Arkansas April 20 The Mississippi river levee near Knowlton has collapsed prompting hundreds to flee homes as backwater 25 feet deep drives refugees along the Missouri Pacific tracks. Skiffs and barges ferry people to improvised shelter while work crews and electric searchlights strive to avert further collapse. A six day supply was sent to Knowlton for workers amid a river drop of about three tenths of a foot.
The Interstate Commerce Commission ordered joint rates and routes between railroads and Inland Waterways Corpora tion effective August 27. Railroads must create schedules with the waterway based largely on 80 percent of existing all rail charges for transportation between the same points. Conferences are to settle divisions of joint rates. The decision covers barge rail and rail barge routes, with rules to avoid major mileage increases.
In Staunton Virginia on April 20 two city school buses side swiped causing three children to be injured. The severely hurt is Jack Wills age 19 with a crushed head. Louise Virginia Desper is hospitalized. Montrose Tucker was treated and discharged.
Washington April 20 Democrat Rep McMillan introduced a bill to permit newspapers and publications containing lottery related advertising to be mailed, aiming to ease distribution of such material through the postal system.
Reports from London state after a brief alert that an unannounced plane may have crossed the Atlantic, observers in Ireland and the Hebrides found no corroborating sightings and the British aviation center had no knowledge of any planned flight. The Shackleford trawler relayed an eastbound plane at 5 o clock, near 58.10 N 14.26 W, leaving observers waiting for a confirmation that never came.
President Hoover opposes the export debenture plan proposed by the national Grange as farm relief. He plans to send a formal statement to the Senate Agricultural Committee for a Monday session after discussions with Senator McNary and Louis Taber. Experts’ reports from agriculture, commerce, and treasury will guide the committee’s consideration.
Federal and insurgent advance forces sit about 25 miles apart in southern Sonora. Government predicted a battle very soon but no action occurred by nightfall. Federals rest at Don while main force stays at San Blas. Insurgents hold outposts at Masiaca with main lines north of Navajoa.
Reports from Nogales say about 8,000 rebels encamped at Masicoa near Navojoa with San Glass in Sinaloa held by federal forces. A 1,000-strong rebel cavalry train arrived, possibly en route to Navajoa, while rebel airplanes under American Captain R H Polk are ready. Federal General Abelardo Rodriguez vows continued bombing until the revolution ends.
Philadelphia April 20. Herbert L. Maris testifies at a coroner inquest that David Steinhardt killed himself on advice of friends and to avoid arrest. Steinhardt, a fugitive New York attorney, had been indicted since January and surrendered to authorities at his wife's request after taking poison. The jury finds death by self action while temporarily deranged. Letters to U S Attorney Tuttle were turned over to assist in custody proceedings.
A bill by Representative Steele of Georgia seeks to establish a southeastern branch of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers. The measure authorizes $2,000,000 for the branch.
Severe weather across the Midwest brings three deaths and multiple injuries as tornadoes strike towns in Texas Oklahoma Kansas Missouri and Colorado. Victims include an infant in Sand Flatts Texas and Paul Kenet in Reece Kansas while towns face extensive property damage and river flooding along the Kaw and Labette rivers.
A Bolivar Missouri tornado at six o'clock tonight injured nine people and caused property damage over 150000 dollars. Fifteen houses were razed and twenty five damaged in a half mile by 200 yard path through the residential district before the storm eased near Buffalo Missouri.
Wilmington April 20 Pi Louis F Bowen Jr five years old died at James Walker Memorial hospital from injuries after being struck by a hit and run car two hours earlier Police arrested Porter Edwards and Sam Norris charged with operating the vehicle after the accident following a suburb arrest within 45 minutes of the hit and run incident
In Elizabethton Tennessee on April 29 union leaders including United Textile Workers president Thomas F. McMahon and VP William Kelley were informed of a suggestion by Adjutant General W C Boyd and Sheriff J M Moreland to remove strike heads from the area to speed a settlement. The move aims to ease tensions around the two rayon mills closed by a weeklong strike. Charles G Wood conciliator had sought talks to groundwork a settlement but progress was limited.
In Fredericksburg Virginia on April 20 Indiana dedicated a bronze tablet memorializing George Rogers Clark. The granite marker on Washington Avenue near Kenmore honors Clark and Virginia, with the Paul Revere chapter DAR of Muncie presenting the tribute as part of Clark conquest centennial observances. George B. Lockwood of Muncie delivered the dedicatory address praising Clark's exploits.
Detroit April 20 United States Senator James Couzens announces the creation of a 10 000 000 trust fund named the Children’s Fund of Michigan to promote health welfare happiness and development of Michigan children and others worldwide. The fund will expire within 25 years with annual disbursements about 700 000 and total payments around 17 500 000 from income. Senator Couzens names himself a trustee and reserves right to alter or enlarge the gift.
Washington April 20 The first week of the special session closed with the House deep in general debate on farm relief and the Senate awaiting a formal report on a related bill in a different form. The House push included debate over the farm board marketing measure seen as administration approved. General debate length extended to Tuesday before amendments. Tilson of Connecticut denied anti immigration restriction motives in backing repeal of national origins provisions. Frear of Wisconsin urged a two cent a pound bounty to aid domestic sugar producers.
