Population Boost Seen From Environmental Center Plan
A 1960s environmental impact statement says the National Environmental Research Center in Research Triangle Park could add about 105000 people to Wake Durham and Orange counties by 2000, with 12000 workers plus 30000 spouses and families, boosting housing schools utilities and medical needs while not overtaxing water. The center, conceived in 1965, would combine NIEHS EPA labs and facilities on a 509 acre site and may not finish before 2015. Public comments run through May 31.
