Soldier on furlough dies in traffic crash near Roaring River
North Wilkesboro April 19 A furloughed corporal Wayne C Byrd 26 of an army detachment at West Point was killed when his car left Highway 268 and plunged 30 feet down an embankment ten miles east of town. Owner William Ray Wood escaped unharmed. Byrd died of a fractured skull after his body was jammed in a half opened door. Patrolmen J A Reeves and R H Hilliard investigated.
