Tumbling Commodity Prices Dominate Business Picture
World speculators in grains and staples dumped holdings as Europe aimed to bolster peace foundations. Prices dropped for wheat, corn, cotton, rubber, copper, hides, and scrap steel, while finished goods markups and Roosevelt’s price stance influenced outlooks. The AP index of industrial activity rose to 104.9, with steel, power, and motor production up, freight carloadings only slightly down. Retail trends showed gains overall, though not uniform, with weather and promotions affecting results. Steel capacity reached 90.3 percent, up from 89.9, amid high March orders anticipated for the second quarter.
