Walkouts Spread as New England Textile Mills Strike
About 800 union members picketed the Berkshire Hathaway plant in New Bedford Massachusetts while 700 plus workers walked out at Biddeford Textile Co and West Point Pepperell in Maine. The walkouts followed failed talks led by Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service official Richard Goggin. The union rejected a 25 cent per hour raise offered this year and next, saying it does not cover living costs. A Bates Manufacturing Lewiston contract was extended to Sunday for member vote. Additional Sunday meetings planned in Willimantie Connecticut and Fitchburg Massachusetts. Hodgman indicated renewed talks possible by Monday as business has improved in most mills since last year’s recession.
