In a Chicago sanitary district tunnel fire and toxic fumes killed seven workers and three rescuing firemen. Sixteen men escaped after 14 hours in an air chamber as a rescue unfolds with fatalities and 46 injured. Fire Captain James F. O Neil led the first squad and did not surface.
RALEIGH April 14 AP The Senate passes its biennial revenue bill 27 to 22 on second reading after refusing to amend to include Hinsdale luxury tax. Debate touched on Day plan and state school funding via Grier Folger finance plan while preserving tax shifts from farm lands to non tax paying groups. Senator Hinsdale urged passage to move 9 million dollars in taxes.
Three Florida men Joseph Knight Joseph Roberts and Carlyn Montecinco drifted 400 miles in the motorboat Mary from Bimini to Miami after engine failure. Rescued by tanker Samuel Q Brown 350 miles off Cape Hatteras after 13 days at sea, they recovered aboard and the motorboat was abandoned due to rough seas. The tanker was en route from Houston with crude oil and will reach New York the next day.
Directors of 14 cotton mills meeting in Gastonia approve a merger forming Textiles Incorporated a $10 million company with about 300000 spindles. They authorize acquiring six more plants by stock exchange and set May 26 stockholder ratification.
Raleigh Apr 14 Coroner L M Waring opened an inquiry into the death of Annie Smith a nine year old Negro child after an alleged whipping at school by two older Negro girls The girl developed pneumonia and died days later Investigators had not learned the names of the two assailants at the time.
Jack Dempsey and Estelle Taylor exchanged statements that cooled talks of a divorce fight in Reno. Dempsey said he sought a divorce after Taylor followed her career and told him to leave. Taylor replied she had not known of his plans and denied the claim.
Madrid April 14 AP The tentative cabinet of the new Spanish provisional republican government was announced with Niceto Alcala Zamora as president and ministers including Miguel Maura minister of terror Indalecio Prieto finance Alvaro Albornoz justice Alejandro Lerroux foreign affairs Manuel Azana war Marcelino Domingo labor Francisco Largo Caballero public works Fernando De Los Rios economy and no navy minister named.
The body of Marchant W. Snow of Currituck county was found in a fish net near Albemarle after a boat fire left Snow and Abraham Gallop missing. Fire-damaged wreckage located nearby suggests they were driven from the boat and likely drowned.
President Hoover spoke on Pan American Day about nations in the western hemisphere settling major differences through orderly processes. He urged cooperation and reciprocal understanding, noting the heavy responsibility on Western Hemisphere countries.
Washington April 14 Prohibition Director Woodcock announced a new high in federal enforcement for March with 5273 dry law arrests and 719 automobile seizures. He noted 200 new agents, 534 permanent injunctions, and a rise in court caseload from February to April while praising the bureau’s performance.
A lone masked bandit entered a Lynchburg Virginia drug store at midnight and escaped with 450 dollars in currency and checks. He fled in a new automobile after politely saying thank you to the staff.
Moscow reports Vyacheslav Molotov and Valerian Kuibyshev told the national scientific congress the five year plan is entirely successful and will finish in 1932. A new five year plan was announced to launch after the first is completed.
Washington reports four Americans killed in and around Puerto Cabezas Nicaragua within 48 hours and three missing as insurgent attacks intensify. Navy orders landings to protect 300 citizens and evacuations arranged aboard Cefalu and Asheville while Marines pursue the insurgents led by Blandon and Sandino near Log Town and along the Coco River.
Frank McGaha 20 confessed to shooting Joel C Brown and implicated Varnelle Gates in the murder of Mims White. The bodies were unearthed from a sink hole in the Big Ben area after McGaha led investigators to the gravesite. McGaha Gates and Peter Brown were jailed in Asheville to await murder trials. Mrs Oma Hicks Brown and Carl Miller were held as witnesses.
Mrs Francis Stokes 30 died early today from a bullet wound believed to be self inflicted in Greenville North Carolina. She is survived by her husband two young children and her mother Frances Marshall of Walnut Cove. The body will be taken to Walnut Cove for burial.
The North Carolina Senate defeated the Baggett bill to tax foreign stocks 26 to 26 adjourned until 10 tomorrow debate stretched as legislators discussed an amendment to tax only the spread between actual value and taxed value. Senators Grier Dunlap Blount Gravely Ward Pritchett spoke on constitutionality and scope.
At Langley Field Virginia on April 14 Captain Robert C Breene and Major Charles A French bailed out after bombs hung by safety wires began striking during a training flight. They landed safely about half a mile from the wrecked aircraft which was demolished by the blasts. The officers were enrolled as members of the Caterpillar club carrying the same life saving badge.
Robert H. Hennessee aged 51 died in a premature explosion while forcing a dynamite charge into a fox den near Marion. The cause of the blast was not determined and McDowell county coroner Dr. J. F. Jonas ruled out an inquest.
The third district association league will hold its annual convention in Goldsboro on Thursday. President E Y Keesler of Charlotte is expected to attend. Delegates from Goldsboro Beaufort Morehead City New Bern Kingston Mount Olive Clinton Warsaw and Wallace will be represented.
Three hundred North Carolina firemen attended the third annual drill college in Durham. State fire marshal Sherwood Brockwell leads the three day event with D. W. Borsnan and Dr. Clarence Goldsmith providing instruction on fighting fires.
Four inmates who had been charged with store breaking and larceny escaped from Scotland jail. A search was underway in Lurineburg on April 14.
Virgilia bank job ends with robbers blowing vault door and escaping with about 400 dollars in small bills. Police search for suspects after the April 14 incident at Citizen's Bank in Virgilia.
