Ruth Nichols of Rye New York aviatrix set a new speed record for women over a three kilometer course in Detroit. She flew the Lockheed Vega making two round trips from Grosse Isle airport with wind conditions affecting times. Officials Knepper Lea vell will certify the flight with a barograph reading to verify an altitude of at least 1000 feet.
William Brock of Detroit set new speed records between Jacksonville Florida and San Diego California using a single vehicle. The feat establishes two records for the most rapid crossing of the continent in opposite directions within the same journey.

George Albert Kernodie Jr., 21, of Burlington, a member of a prominent local family, died early today when his automobile struck an abutment of the Back Creek Bridge ten miles from Haw River. The car plunged down an embankment and he was found alone.
Odessa Gardner, 23, died in Wilkes hospital after taking poison last night. She apparently did so intentionally. relatives could not explain a motive.

Six white men fled Rutherford County jail in an escape aided by Jimmie Barnes and others. The March 25 break involved Linnie Flynn Lonnie Flynn Riley Hensley Hop Valentine and George Brady. Barnes allegedly helped release inmates from their cells and the outer bars. They were recaptured except Barnes who stayed as a trusty. Authorities believe they fled town in a stolen car once outside.
President Hoover will be unable to attend the funeral of his uncle Major Laban J. Miles who died at Pawhuska Oklahoma. A wreath from the White House conservatory has been sent to Pawhuska for the funeral. Hoover had lived with Miles for a year as a youth.

Seven people died in a series of airplane crashes across the United States on Sunday. George Wein and mechanic Carl Jantz perished when a control wire failed near Milwaukee. Certin Munson and W H Portman died in Houston as a wing buckled during a bank. Hugh Shipley and Homer Potwine fell from 3800 feet in Sodus, New York, piloted by Robert Loope. Walter Frick of Marion Illinois died in a 1000 foot dive at the Gray Eagle Flying Service. William Davis suffered a skull fracture and crushed leg after a 500 foot fall before 4000 spectators in Hasbrouck, New Jersey aboard one of five French aircraft brought by Charles Levine.
In Barcelona on April 13 AP reports Colonel Francisco Macia, a Catalan separatist leader, urged the crowd to depose King Alfonso after the Republican victory. He warned disobedience would invite a bloody dictatorship as the people would rise, comparing the king to Louis XVI who was executed.
In Raleigh on April 13 the senate planned a second reading debate on a revenue bill funding a 10 million dollar equalization fund. Contenders for the MacLean law seek 18.5 million for six months schooling and the extended term, while house supporters push different tax plans to fund education and avoid ad valorem taxes.
Chicago April 13. Three robbers tried to hold up the L Aiglon cafe on the Gold Coast. Head waiter Frank Adler who served three years with the German army on the western front shot and killed two of the robbers. The third fled. Adler earned praise for marksmanship during wartime service.

Smith’s barograph was sent to Washington for calibration after a second attempt. Nichols said she would attempt a trans Atlantic flight if she had a ship and backing.

Former heavyweight champion Jack Dempsey confirms via his manager that he is in Reno for a divorce at the wife Estelle Taylor's request. The filing is expected to allege incompatibility with no contest anticipated, and property matters reportedly settled outside the case.
