Senator Simmons of North Carolina denounces the administration tariff bill as the most un-American ever framed. He says it overreaches limits, raises prices for farmers and manufactured goods, harms export markets, and carries 2000 amendments added by Republicans behind closed doors in three months of drafting.
Citizens are urged to attend a High Point chamber meeting Friday at 7 30 pm to discuss how the organization should be conducted. Officers say participation by members is essential and that the chamber operates as a democratic body with open committees in civic mercantile industrial traffic convention publicity agriculture and good roads.
In Corning Arkansas Miss Pearl Pugley wins a verdict from Judge Bandy overruling school restrictions on cosmetics. The judge will issue a writ of mandamus to compel the board to set aside its rule barring students from using face powder. Miss Pugley was suspended last September for cosmetics use.
New Bern NC April 13 Representative Samuel Brinson third North Carolina district died at 6 30 this morning after a week in a local hospital. He had returned from Rochester Minn where an operation was performed and had indicated he would seek reelection this fall. Born March 20 1870 he was educated at Wake Forest College and UNC and served Craven County school superintendent before joining the 66th Congress. He is survived by one daughter Miss Mary Steele Brinson.
J. T. Ryan returned from Washington where he attended a conference of United States trade associations as secretary of the Southern Manufacturers' Association. The gathering, called by Secretary Hoover, discussed what statistics trade groups may publish without violating anti trust laws. Senator Edge urged early action on a joint resolution to form a congressional committee to study government aid to business.
Snow and high winds crippled western wire services with Nebraska under deep snow. Denver reports a northern Rocky Mountain snowstorm while Leadville records eight above and Lander Wyoming eight inches of new snow.
A large attendance is urged for tonight at 8 o clock by Andrew Jackson post American Legion. The session will be in Chamber of Commerce rooms on South Main Street with Dr I T Mann commander noting important business to be discussed.
Rosa Mitchell was found not guilty of running a disorderly house in Highland mills but held as a vagrant. She was fined $50 and costs with a $100 bond for appeal, after Prosecutor T W Albertson amended the indictment to include vagrancy.
Greenwich New Jersey April 13 Captain Harry W Sheppard and Jacob Fisher while fishing for shod encountered a school of sturgeon. They landed one weighing 245 pounds after a strenuous struggle. The captain used a halter due to no landing hooks and received 102 dollars for thirty four pounds of roe from the fish.
Volunteers formed bucket brigades and used extinguishers from Pine Tree Paper Co to save Gordon, Georgia, early today. The blaze was checked in the residential area with no report of injuries.

Demonstration of a six ton gasoline motor railroad car built by Perley A. Thomas Car Works on the Carolina and Yadkin River railroad between High Point and Thomasville impressed officials. The combined baggage and passenger car weighs six tons, seats 16, with a 40 passenger trailer, and is powered by a Wisconsin four cylinder motor achieving up to 35 mph and five miles per gallon. The car, costing about 10 000 dollars with trailer about 15 000 dollars, aims to reduce operating costs for small railroads to 25 30 percent of traditional steam trains and will be demonstrated in Baltimore and other cities for short line railroads.
Washington reports the census bureau shows March cotton consumption rose by about 46 000 bales from February while February spindle activity fell by nearly two million. The gain was largest in cotton growing states totaling 65 percent of March national use, with 518 450 bales of lint and 44 177 bales of linters consumed.
