The Asheville Times reports a survey across Western North Carolina showing fruit crops damaged by freezing weather in recent days by about seventy five percent.
Raleigh April 11 UP T L Laughlin of Archdale W J Armfield Jr of Asheboro and A B Beasley of Randleman received a charter for Laughlin F F Hosiery Mills Inc from Secretary of State Thad Bur e The incorporators subscribed 300 of the 100000 authorized capital for the hosiery making and selling firm.
Attorney General A. A. F. Sea well announced that assistant Harry McMullan would travel to Washington tomorrow to press a bill granting North Carolina the right to appeal a federal power commission ruling against the Carolina Aluminum Co.
In Yakima Washington on April 11 an automobile collision caused the death of Mrs Lyman Thew and four of her children who burned when their car was struck. Her husband who had been repairing the vehicle, his daughter Ruby and two people in the second car were burned and injured.
Army officers said new long range guns to hit attackers along the 5000 mile coastline and submarine mine equipment to snag invaders ships may soon fill gaps in a 65 million dollar coast defense program. They cited fortifications of New York Harbor entrance and Chesapeake Bay as strengthening security for the nation’s capital and its largest city. Details remain secret.
New York April 11 Richard Whitney former president of the New York Stock Exchange was sentenced to five to ten years in prison for grand larceny in the use of securities entrusted to him Whitney will serve the sentence in Sing Sing prison and could be released after about three and a half years with good behavior.
In São Paulo 31 children died when a crowd of 2 500 rushed exits during a false fire alarm at a crowded motion picture theater. Fourteen were gravely injured and two more seriously.
Berlin reports the April plebiscite across Germany and Austria yields 48,799,269 yes votes for Anschluss with 452,180 no and 75,342 invalid. Turnout nears 50 million, Austria shows 99.75 percent yes while Jews are barred from voting.
North Carolina's first big money crop of 1938 opened markets in seven towns including Mount Olive Rose Hill Burgaw Chadbourn Tabor City Warsaw and Wallace. Estimated total sales around 1.5 million dollars. About 2000 workers expected to be hired with peak picker demand in the next two weeks.

Spanish insurgents crossed the Segre at Balaguer under heavy bombardment shaping a route to Barcelona. Navarrese and Gallivin troops crossed bridges despite stiff government resistance and bayonet assaults, securing a four mile advance toward the provisional government seat 76 miles from Barcelona. Balaguer lies 14 miles northeast of Lerida as insurgents press on Catalonia front toward Bonatgua ridge and Aran valley.
The state department expects a busy year due to unsettled world conditions and budgets nearly 100000 hours of overtime pay for 1938-39. For the current year ending June 30 officials estimate about 90000 overtime hours will be worked. The extra hours stem from technical work that cannot be handled by more staff. Secretary Hull is not included in overtime calculations.
The North Carolina division of the American Association of University Women will hold its annual convention in Durham on April 29 and 30. Speakers include Dr. J B Rhine of Duke University noted as an ESP authority and Miss Harriet Elliot from the University of North Carolina Woman's College.

The Supreme Court refused to intervene in a 30 day jail sentence for contempt of a house committee against Dr Frank Townsend author of the Townsend old age pension plan. It denied review of the DC Circuit Court of Appeals upholding the conviction for walking out on a committee. It also declined cases on a Kentucky court of appeals decision and a constitutional amendment on child labor.
J H Prady was held without bond for the fatal shooting of 15 year old Lee Gus Chapman and wounding of 14 year old Osmond Erwin in Asheville. Police say the youths tried to steal chickens from Frady yard. Erwin recalls another boy named Joe was not hit.
Washington April 11 Administrations leaders plan a final push this week to preserve a modified tax on undistributed corporate profits. A joint conference committee will decide broad differences between Senate and House tax plans. The tax fight centers on a proposal backed by business interests and opposed by some lawmakers.
President Roosevelt and leaders agree that a 1.25 billion dollar appropriation is needed for work relief during the first seven months of the new fiscal year starting July 1. The request targets WPA only and will be sent in a special message to Congress soon.

City council in a special session approved advertising a public hearing for April 27 at 10 a m on a proposed ordinance to create AA districts allowing apartment houses in Residence A and B zones. The plan would set strict building rules and require a residents petition and council approval before permitting a 73 unit development on Jones Street.
In New York on April 11 Patrolman Joel L Kashuck 35 reported I have shot myself after being suspended for intoxication He walked two flights down saluted and collapsed The officer had earlier been stripped of his revolver and shield after a surgeon judged him unfit for duty and apparently overdosed on intoxicants following a prisoner intake.
Two Hamlet men died and three others were seriously injured in an automobile collision in southwestern Scotland county. The deceased were C J Lookemy and Herbert Hart. Albert Brown Bill Harrill and Lonnie Fuller were hospitalized. County officers detained Carl Brigman of Marelboro county South Carolina as the driver of one car. Lonnie Fuller operated the other vehicle.
The Supreme Court set aside the murder conviction of Joe Hale a Kentucky Negro ruling that juries which indicted and tried him excluded members of his race. The court ordered a new trial reversing the Mc Cracken county circuit court while the Kentucky Court of Appeals had affirmed the conviction.
Chicago police report Mrs. Sarah Wald and Jack Glutzer both deaf mutes confessed to planning the death of Wald's husband Louis Wald. Louis was found with a fractured skull after a hammer attack. Wald and Glutzer cited Wald's refusal to grant a divorce as motive. Wald is in serious condition. Glutzer is held for assault to kill and Mrs Wald jailed as accessory before the fact.

He suggested combining all transportation agencies into one department and released the ICC committee report recommending $300 million in equipment purchases, RFC loan powers for 12 months, and full-rate government traffic pay, among other ideas.
