Senate backs down on AAA beneficiaries data request

The Senate agriculture committee partially backtracked from a resolution seeking all AAA beneficiaries paid $1,000 or more and limited data to recipients of $10,000 or more per contract year. Chairman Smith said names would be published for farmers earning over $16,000 in crop year respect to a commodity, while other senators doubted the scope. The panel had previously authorized reports on all payments above $1,000, but altered the plan to ease workload and speed department response.

Two Detained in Deputy's Ambush Death

Linville April 6 two youths Reed Coffee 21 nephew of the slain deputy Hardy Coffee and Ronald McRae 17 were held after the ambush slaying of Avery County deputy Hardy Coffee last night. Sheriff W H Hughes said the motive involved tracking down law breakers. The suspects were in custody after hours of questioning and faced an Avery county superior court term starting today.

Tornado Toll Rises Across Deep South in April Disaster

Raleigh April 6 The sales tax clash between Dr Ralph McDonald of Winston-Salem a governor candidate and State Revenue Commissioner A J Maxwell continued. Maxwell warned the revenue yield would fall short of replacing the sales tax with McDonalds spending program. Tornado Kills Family in Elkwood area near Huntsville

A tornado leveled their home in Elkwood near Huntsville last night killing Sherill Swinford his wife and their two year old Clyde. Their son Glen age 6 was severely hurt and three other family members in the same house wounded. The storm struck about 11 P M and news reached Huntsville by morning as injured were brought to treatment.

Tremendous Tornado Kills 113 in Four States

The south's worst tornado in five years claimed 113 lives across four states with 82 bodies recovered in Tupelo. Mayor J. P. Nanny estimated at least 100 fatalities in the Tupelo area and 500 to 1,000 injuries as the storm ripped through the city known as a “little TVA.”

Brooklyn reports detail a cremation service for Bruno Hauptmann after his death. Mrs. Anna Hauptmann plans a parting view as Rev. D G Werner and Rev John Matthiesen lead the service.
