Cigarette Leader Defends Industry Amid Health Criticism
New York A The destructive tactics of medical headline hunters were among obstacles to the tobacco industry's growth last year says H A Kent chairman of P Lorillard Co at the annual stockholders meeting. He predicted volume would expand and the industry would resume progress noting Lorillard weathered crusades epidemics and adverse criticism and posted its second best year in 1954 despite sales and earnings decline. Kent argued no definite conclusions on smoking and cancer have been reached and urged scientists and agencies to seek truth rather than foster fear with hurried studies. He said the industry seeks final and definite answers and will act to isolate and eliminate any real link between smoking and cancer. He cited factors like longer cigarettes with more puffs fewer young smokers and an aging population reducing overall consumption.
