Jamestown Man Drowns After Car Plunges Into River

A Jamestown man identified as BE B. Wiike about 60, a retired railroad worker, drowned when his car with a lumber trailer plunged off a bridge into Deep River near Jamestown. Divers freed the submerged vehicle after about an hour. no other vehicle involvement was found. Eyewitnesses suggested the trailer may have caused loss of control.

Weather Aids Firefighters Containing Large North Carolina Blaze

Heavy livestock toll feared after Arctic storm

The arctic storm left 16 foot snowdrifts in Wyoming and Montana stranding hundreds. Officials warn livestock losses could be heavy with 90 percent of cattle and sheep without food since the storm began. Four Gunmen Strike Queens Bank for 350000 Loot

Four masked gunmen held up the Chase Manhattan Bank Woodside branch at 8:30 a.m. forcing staff into a vault and escaping with about 350000. Police say it may be the largest bank holdup in New York City history, timed with a nearby jewelry heist.

Forest Fire in Eastern NC Shows Signs of Control

Claridge reported to the C and D Board forestry committee that a light shower and strong firefighting efforts have nearly contained a forest blaze in eastern North Carolina. More rain is forecast, with over 200000 acres burned and timber losses estimated between three and four million dollars. An investigation into delayed reports may follow after crews return to their stations.
