Christians worldwide observed Good Friday with three hour services recalling Christ's agony before Easter. In New York St Patrick's Cathedral held 9 am mass with tenebrae and a noon communion, and services ran 7 to 10 pm. Protestant St John the Divine also hosted a noon to 3 pm service while other churches staged dramatic plays.
Atlantic City officials announce next year's Miss America will receive a $10,000 scholarship, doubling prior awards. Leonora Slaughter, executive director of the Miss America pageant, notes that $5,000 is insufficient for a four year college plan today.

Joseph Benjamin Ivey 93 founder of J B Ivey & Co and a Charlotte merchant died in a local hospital. He started in 1881 and built a six store chain with annual sales over 20 million. Stores stretch from North and South Carolina to Florida. Funeral set for 3:30 p.m. at First Methodist Church with pallbearers from the six stores. He leaves four children eight grandchildren 11 great grandchildren and a stepdaughter.
Gov Timmerman signed a 151 million dollar appropriations bill for the coming fiscal year, pushing South Carolina into the red by about 1.2 million. Lawmakers, home for Easter, left a pending adjournment resolution for Senate action with sessions and veto messages possible through April 18.
