Washington reports government economists estimate the federal deficit may fall to around 22 billion dollars for the current year with a possible wipeout in 1946-47. Treasury technicians expect tax receipts for the year ending June 30 to exceed January forecasts by two to three billion dollars.

Secretary of commerce Henry A. Wallace told the House Ways and Means Committee that universal coverage is the democratic way and urged extending Social Security to about 70 million farmers, businessmen, and others not now included in the plan. He warned there is no justification to exclude any population from these benefits.
Federal spending cuts and faster demobilization expected to trim the coming deficit by several billion dollars. White House officials say the deficit may be five to six billion less than the 28 billion dollar estimate, with taxes and treasury balances shaping the fiscal year beginning July 1. Albert Caudle a 38 year old manager of a chain hat and shirt shop in Charlotte died early today from injuries believed to be sustained in a fist fight with two shop employees yesterday. George Rice and Thomas Henderson were held by police after the death. Caudle reportedly went by taxi to Memorial hospital for treatment and later suffered a fatal headache and incoherence at home.
Sgt and Mrs Arnold Armstrong of Kannapolis awaited Christmas as Arnold returned from Germany after 18 months. The couple held a belated celebration when he arrived at Fort Bragg to end the separation, delivering a story of delayed holiday joy.
Raleigh reports Attorney General Harry McMullan states in a digest of opinions that a person leaving a dry county and traveling within the same county with tax paid liquor in a car is guilty of illegal transportation and possession for sale. He adds that possession can support a verdict of illegal possession for sale. He notes beer or wine up to 14 percent may be sold by licensed retailers on airplanes.
A Washington survey shows about half of North and South Carolinians in Congress favor keeping the draft after May 15, while many want to delay universal military training. Key lawmakers from both states sit on military and foreign affairs panels, shaping postwar defense policy and international commitments.
At noon two men were injured when their car rear ended a stopped vehicle at North Main and Howell. William F. Russell and Thomas J. Brewer, recently released from the armed services, were taken to High Point Memorial hospital after attempting to flee. Brewer suffered facial lacerations and possible arm fracture. Russell had less severe injuries. The other car was driven by Mrs. L A Welch. her vehicle stopped for a red light before being struck from behind.
Soviet papers publish New York dispatch detailing Andrei Gromyko’s note to the United Nations Security Council with little discussion in Moscow. The headline reads In the Security Council as the full tempo of the note is aired.
Council president Quo indicates secretary Byrnes urged acceptance of Russia's assurances as satisfactory and suggested deferring the case to May 6 to receive Iran reports, by which time Russian forces may depart Iran.
Comptroller General Lindsay Warren denounces a section of the atomic energy control bill as a mockery and a fraud arguing it would allow unchecked spending. He warns the proposed joker provision could let the commission audit and certify any expenditure as necessary, bypassing proper oversight. Chairman McMahon counters the need to avoid interrupting essential atomic projects.
