Wilkes county jail holds 19 year old Darrel Pierce in connection with the slaying of 18 year old Arville Matherly in Purlear township. Matherly suffered multiple knife wounds to chest back and throat during a fray near Adkins shop last night.
Wallace Moses Jr. the Athletics star outfielder ended his holdout after Connie Mack announced terms are reached. Moses will arrive Wednesday from Houston Texas to rejoin the club in Atlanta.
Three hundred union members gathered at the St. Louis county side of the St. Charles Missouri river bridge as a general strike involving 6000 AFL workers became effective in protest against the use of non union labor on the bridge repair project.
In Raleigh the utilities commission heard Atlantic Greyhound arguments for a Raleigh Lexington route. Opposing petitioners Carolina Coach and Greensboro Fayetteville Bus Lines argued a joint franchise would provide more adequate local service and warned against a monopoly in east west travel.

Gov Frank Murphy summoned leaders of Consumers Power and a striking union to a Detroit meeting after returning from Florida. He said a settlement should come within a day and no power shut off would occur. James F Dewey of the U S Labor Department attended the talks.
Admiral Leahy urged the Senate Naval Affairs Committee to widen the capital ship tonnage in the 1.1 billion naval expansion bill. Hull warned restricting operations to a naval frontier would isolate the United States and urged maintaining a 6-5-3 ratio with England and Japan. Secretary Hull argued for security until an arms conference is feasible, while Borah questioned the need for more ships.
In Gastonia area two small textile plants saw strikes today with peaceful picketing. Alba Twine Mill near Stanley in Lincoln County joined 50 workers in a wage cut protest, while about one third of Lola Mills operatives at Stanley walked out. Lola plant ran partially while Alba Mill remained idle. No formal demands were presented yet.
MARION, N. C., April 4. H. H. Tate, 62, mayor of Marion for 16 years, died early today of a stroke suffered during a fire call. He died en route to a hospital. Tate had not fully recovered from a previous stroke and is survived by his wife and two daughters.

Shanghai dispatch reports Japanese forces, aided by artillery and air power, occupied Taierchwang in Southern Shantung after nine days of engagement. Chinese troops retreated toward Kiangsu as defense lines near the Grand Canal were destroyed, with about 200,000 Chinese in the border fighting. The battle included scorched houses as a smoke screen and heavy casualties on both sides.
Berlin April 4. The government announced a new internal loan of one billion marks to be floated starting April 19 with subscriptions open until May 4. The issue amounts to about 400 million dollars and reflects wartime finance measures.
An official Sudenten German party release in Prague warns that a Jewish boycott in the United States against Sudenten German goods could lead Germans in Czechoslovakia to cancel orders for U S cotton. It says they will source cotton from Egypt India and other regions and warns Washington's commerce department.

Olin D Johnston Jr two year old son of the Governor and Mrs Johnston fell ill with pneumonia and was described as a very sick baby in Columbia South Carolina. Mrs Johnston and their five month old daughter also ill with influenza but not seriously.
The British admiralty ordered the 1100 ton battle cruiser Hood to proceed to Barcelona to assist in any evacuation of the Spanish government capital that may be required.
Steve Nance 42, regional director for the Textile Workers Organizing Committee and a Georgia labor leader, died in a Atlanta hospital after a Friday night collapse. Doctors cited a blood clot on the brain causing paralysis.
