Recreation program in Guilford County hinges on revenue sharing

Guilford County faces a uncertain summer recreation program with funding tied to the federal revenue sharing plan. Chairman Gaston Falson says the 1975-76 program cost about 60,000 dollars and revenue sharing could drop to about half next year. Without that income the county may delay non mandated programs and face tax increases to maintain essentials. The vote of rural property owners showed little support for higher taxes to fund recreation. The budget plan prioritizes basic needs, salary considerations for employees, and waiting for the full financial picture before commitments.

Free Telephone Calls To Raleigh Questioned By Legislators

Budget minded lawmakers question the value of free long distance calls to state agencies costing $94,380 annually. The program started in the State Library in 1988 and expanded to nine agencies. Critics note some calls may be for personal use by legislators. Divorces rise as marriages fall in North Carolina with over 68,000 people involved in 22,000 divorces last year. Births continue to decline, down 15 percent since 1971. Proclamations honoring retirees and officials are described with formal language, while a reader notes a sharp contrast in praising Ray Shurling’s leadership at the juvenile training school program.

Best control: retain flood water at high points in watershed

A Guilford County proposal to the Board of Commissioners argues flood control is best achieved by delaying and preserving flood water at the highest points. It recommends acquiring upstream land and land held in reserve, budgeting 100000 for next year, and encouraging gifts along streams and flood plains to slow flow and filter contaminants.
