Washington reports the U S unemployment rate fell to 7.5 percent in March marking the fifth straight monthly decline and the longest sustained drop in 14 years. Total employment rose by 375000 to a record 86.7 million with blacks and women leading gains.
AP reports four major U S auto makers may close plants next week as Teamsters strike expands. Food and fuel shortages unlikely at first, but DOT warns one week could cost up to 300 million dollars with considerable consumer difficulties if the walkout lasts two weeks.

Three detectives and the suspect, Ronald Joseph Born alias Joseph Mowlood, died from wounds after a shooting spree. Born, wanted on interstate auto theft charges, used a stolen car and then shot himself. Detectives Tommy Hodges Clark Curlette and Frank Cazevedo, all in the Dade County Public Safety auto theft division, were killed in the incident.
Raleigh AP David Flaherty announced his candidacy for governor as a Republican distancing himself from the Holshouser administration. At 47, he touts a record in state government and business, garners support from the Broyhill family, and vows to be his own man without Holshouser aides. He previously served in the state Senate and led the Department of Human Resources.
Ford moves to end a two day old nationwide Teamster truck drivers strike triggering layoffs. Negotiations near agreement on an economic package though distribution remains disputed. Government reports requested to assess impact if Taft Hartley act used. GM cuts 5,600 assembly jobs at GMC Truck and Coach in Pontiac with 2,000 remaining.
Truck driver James Kelly of Preston Trucking Co. in Norfolk plays banjo with fellow Teamster Oscar Tate during a picket break. Kelly Tate and thousands of Teamsters walked out after industry and union officials failed to reach a contract settlement before the April 2 deadline.
President Ford denounced Ronald Reagan for basing attacks on misleading statements as he campaigned in Milwaukee and West Bend. Ford defended U S military edge over the Soviet Union and urged party unity despite Reagan TV tactics ahead of Wisconsin primary votes.
