School Board Rejects Budget Cut Approves More Funds
RALEIGH AP The state Board of Education rejected cutting last year’s budget and will seek an additional 99 million dollars to preserve current services. They warned cuts would reduce teachers and disrupt public education, urging legislature to decide staffing levels while aiming to cover a 70 million revenue shortfall and fund a 69.5 million pay raise for teachers and state workers. The board plans to attend the April 26 appropriations meeting to push for more funds and notes a 14 million demand for public instruction and 26 million for community colleges amid rising enrollment. Ruby Murchison, national teacher of the year, spoke about her White House award ceremony with President Ford.

Early Leaf Crop Seen In North Carolina Tobacco
North Carolina tobacco experts expect a slightly early crop this year with ample plant supply. Warm weather lured some farmers to set plants early, but a brief cold spell slowed growth and caused limited damage. Some growers resowed after over-early planting, while others anticipate a week’s advance in the season.
