Secretary of state Byrnes returns from a White House conference to UN headquarters with renewed assurance of President Truman's strong backing as he prepares to tackle tomorrow's Iran crisis developments.
Everett Hoagland and his New York orchestra were ordered to leave Mexico in reprisal for the American Federation of Musicians blocking a Mexican orchestra. Hoagland, leading at Ciro's in Mexico City since 1942, said union officials claimed all U S orchestras must stop playing in Mexico. He noted he and his players belong to the Mexican union and he also holds AFM membership.
A massive submarine earthquake triggered 10 to 100 foot waves, hitting Hawaii and the Aleutians. In Hilo alone 60 bodies recovered with many missing, and a naval officer warned deaths could reach 300. Damage ran into millions as shelters and food stocks dwindled.

With only 74 hours left, it remained uncertain if Soviet Ambassador Andrei Gromyko would attend Wednesday’s 11 a.m. council session.
Rep. John H. Folger of the fifth district said he will run "definitely and unequivocally" in the race for Congress. He noted uncertainty in parts of his district and repeated he will stay in the contest until the last vote is counted after signaling potential retirement if opposed on March 12.
In Hulbert Oklahoma two bank robbers fled a pre dawn attempt at the Hulbert National Bank. A bus load of local students and a lime spreader chased them toward a creek where they hid submerged until state troopers arrived. The loot included two sacks of silver coins and currency. most of it was recovered and the suspects were taken to Muskogee for questioning.
Senate supporters of Commodore James K. Vardaman Jr. asked for a vote as Morse of Oregon and Donnell of Missouri signaled possible delays. Morse blasts the confirmation process as a pretense while Donnell needs more time to outline reasons against confirmation.
The report notes no near resolution in three major labor disputes as Detroit and Ohio transit strikes paralyze public transport and a coal mine sit down idles about 400000 workers. Negotiations in Washington yielded no progress with AFL United Mine Workers and bituminous operators. Local transit workers in Detroit keep buses and street cars idle amid wage dispute stalemate.
An informed source says the army and navy protested to the U S coast and geodetic survey that official warning of the tidal waves hitting Hawaii could have saved many lives. The submarine shock was recorded five hours earlier at Pasadena California. Lt Cmdr W D Patterson Pacific district supervisor learned of the wave when water surged into his beach home.
The War Department announced that activation of organized reserve corps units will begin this summer as the third step in building a post war army. The program aims to create a reserve six times larger than 1920 levels, with 1 450 000 officers and men planned for July 1 and reductions later.
CHUNGKING April 2. Chinese communists demand that American forces stop transporting nationalist troops to Manchuria as clashes over force size continue. Government troops reportedly entered Yinkow March 28. Ta Kung Pao dispatches cite Russian evacuation of Mengkia and attacks by about 600 communists at Santzien railway station in Shuntung.
At the international tribunal Joachim von Ribbentrop testified he rebuked Mussolini over Italian mercy toward Jews in southern occupied France. He said the German foreign office tried to soften anti Semitic measures and acknowledged plans to resettle Jews in east territories or Madagascar. He cited a large spy network among Jews aiding Allies and noted Hitler sought Mussolini’s assurance to halt the Jews.
About 50 southern Democratic state legislators demanded a personal apology from party Chairman Robert Hannegan for a critical article in the Democratic Digest. They urged retraction and removal of the article's author from the party payroll. The meeting followed a disputed note on the Case labor bill amid ongoing senate debate.
Dr Charles F Richter of Caltech explains the tidal wave from a submarine quake near the Aleutians. He cites earth motion depth of water and other factors as making the wave unusually large, possibly moving 400 mph in deep water. The quake, first recorded at 7 38 am EST, was moderate with epicenter likely in the Aleutian deep.
In Athens the right wing populist party accepted Regent archbishop Damaskinos’s request to form a new government after a morning meeting with four party leaders. The move follows calls for King George II’s return and amid disputes over election tallies and alleged irregularities by leftist groups.
RAF Mosquitos assisted a convoy from Batavia to Dandoeng by making two strafing runs over the area. The hostile forces in Indonesia were dispersed and the column reached the British base at Tjandoer in mid afternoon without further opposition.
Raleigh April 2. Robert Womble a 35 year old Apex farmer drowned in the Cape Fear river in Chatham county when a fishing boat capsized late yesterday. His body was recovered early today. Funeral arrangements have not been completed.
