In a Sunday wreck near Oyama, C R Blanton, 38, died at Richard Baker Hospital after a motorcycle collision with a car driven by C M McCorkle. H Q Blanton, injured, leg broken, remains hospitalized. both parties from Hickory Newton area. The report notes a fatal misjudgment on a curving hill and preservation of bodies for burial.

Burned passengers on Mexican train attack near Torres
Eighty Southern Pacific Mexican train passengers were placed in a hay car and set ablaze by about sixty bandits near Torres Sonora. Only twenty were accounted for. the others perished. The attack derailed the train running from Camp Verde to Torres, with most victims women and children. No Americans believed aboard.

Peter Wilfong and Family of Catawba County
Peter Wilfong son of George Wilfong born and raised where Catawba county now lies. He owned part of his father's farm on the South Fork river and raised a family with wife Sueannah C Hoyle, daughter of John Hoyle. His wife Susannah C Wilfong died June 7 1828 at age 54. Peter Wilfong died December 28 1841 in his 66th year. They were buried at St Pauls Church in Catawba county and were early members of St Pauls Reformed Church.

Lenoir College observed its Quarto Centennial with a full program last Thursday. Rev A R Beck led scripture and Rev E J Sox offered a prayer. President R Fritz reviewed 25 years of college work before a 1200 person crowd. John J George of Cherryville urged on fundraising. Sermonic lecture by Rev S P Long of Mansfield Ohio followed. A 200 foot long picnic table fed about 1200, with ample leftovers. Several talks by Rev W P Cline and laymen closed the program. D L Russell missed due to business in Georgia.

Hickory Free Library reception boosts new books
The Hickory Free Library held a reception last Thursday night with over 250 new volumes added to the collection some valuable. The decorated room featured seasonable flowers and a Victrola for music. Attendees included Mrs C M Royster president J J Willard and many local families. Subscriptions were renewed by Sylvanus Cline and J S Starnes Route 2 Hickory, both increasing their terms by two years.
