London May 2. British reports say two German torpedo boats were sunk in the North Sea while the destroyer Recruit was lost. Four officers and twenty-one men were saved by the ship Daisy. The trawler Colombia was also sunk after torpedo attack, with one hand saved by other trawlers. A British destroyer division sank two German vessels with no casualties among its ships. two German officers and thirty-four sailors were rescued and captured.

Alfred Gunther Captain of Gulf Light Sunk off Scilly Isles
The captain of the tank steamer Gulf Light and New York resident Alfred Gunther died when the vessel was torpedoed off the Scilly Islands. First mate Ralph Smith of Wakefield and several crew members from New England are identified. Gunther had previously commanded the Okla comba which sank in January 1914 off the New Jersey coast. he and several crew escaped in a lifeboat and were rescued by another steamer.
