James Monroe Finger was born and raised in Catawba county. He joined in 1862, served in company B of the Forty Second North Carolina Regiment under Kirkland Brigade Hoke's Division. He fought at Bermuda Hundred Second Cold Harbor Petersburg Second Battle of Kingston Fort Fisher Bentonville and other engagements. He surrendered near High Point April 6 1865. After the war he returned to the farm as a secessionist farmer and respected citizen.
