John Baker and His Axes Pioneer of Catawba County
A lengthy biographical sketch of John Baker born 1775 in North Carolina. He migrated from Pennsylvania, married Catherine Yoder, built a log house and later a larger home, ran a blacksmith shop making axes, and sold ware to buyers up to twenty miles away. He accumulated wealth through industry and economy, owned a enslaved man named Bob, joined the Dunkers and later the Baptist church, and died suddenly after fighting a forest fire. His descendants moved to Jackson, Missouri, and his granddaughter wrote the piece.
