Shuford Wins Hickory Mayoral Race By Seven Votes

Citizens of Hickory chose Jones W. Shuford as mayor over Geo L. Lyerly by seven votes in a friendly contest. Aldermen elected were J L Abernethy in Ward 3 and A P Whitener in Ward 4 with margins shown. totals include 42 to Abernethy and 246 for Whitener’s ward race.

Catawba Dairy Cows Yield Profit in County Study

Newton reports County Agent H. K. Foster presents averages from 719 cows in Southern states showing an average milk yield of 4,299.4 pounds and 216.8 pounds butter fat with net profit of 32.63 dollars per cow after feed. Best 10 cows average 2,681.9 pounds milk and 459 pounds butter fat, value 144.97 dollars, feed 65.73, net 79.24, with butter fat costing 1.43 dollars per pound and feed yield 2.20 in return. Sevens tons of manure add fertilizer value, boosting per cow yearly value to about 53.35 dollars.

Reward Offered for Goodson Murder Arrest

County commissioners at their regular meeting offered a $100 reward for the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the murder of Pink Goodson. He was killed on the night of March 13 when a party attacked his house with rifles and pistols a few miles north of the city.

Mrs Sarah Houck Dies. Burial Set in Granite Falls

Mrs. Sarah Houck mother of Mrs. R F Sides of this city died at the home of her daughter Mrs J S Sides in Charlotte early Monday. Body taken to Granite Falls for burial, birthplace of Mrs Houck. Surviving relatives include several Sides family members and grandchildren. Husband preceded her in death.

Sleeping cars ban tightens late night noise rules

Mrs Henkel Dies In City In 37th Year

Mrs John E Henkel of this city dies at home Sunday in her 37th year. The funeral was Monday morning at First Presbyterian Church led by Rev J G Garth and Rev J D Harte. Interment at Oakwood cemetery. Survived by husband and three children Lola Flossie and Ruth. The bereaved family has the sympathy of the community.

History of German Families Explored by Rev Shuford

Rev J H Shuford plans a book on twelve German families from Catawba Burke Caldwell and Lincoln counties after writing a local history.
