Vast throngs filled the Hershey Department Store for a three day Spring opening and Fashion Carnival. The event showcased spring fashion, décor by D. Fred Botts, and a live orchestra, signaling continued growth and broader service for the store and region.
John Allwine of Derry Church lost his car while at market in Harrisburg on Saturday. Police found the vehicle hours later near Hoffman's woods, north of Blakesburg. A 15 year old, Charles M. Brets of Harrisburg, was arrested for operating the car without the owner's consent and had a police court hearing.
The Easter egg, dyed or decorated, symbolized creation and rebirth across cultures from Persians to Christians. Customs include egg games in medieval churches, gilded eggs in France, Welsh egg clapping, and Russian egg greetings. Rev Chare L Fry D D of Philadelphia will present an illustrated talk on The Miracle of South America's New attitude to the United States at Central Theatre Friday evening April 1. The free event invites Hershey residents to learn about the neighbor republics with no admission charge and no collections. Children only with parents.
A splendid Easter Musicale by the Choir of the First United Brethren church is set for Sunday evening at 7 30, displacing the regular service. Admission is free with a silver offering to fund new editions for the choir library. The program includes Gloria Patri, readings, solos, duets, and choral numbers led by Rev. Butterwick and featuring Elizabeth Light Sterling Light Warren Sattazahn Ruth Evelyn Runkel and others.
The sixth Annual Convention will be held in the basement of the Lutheran Church on March 28 and 29 with three services at 7 30 on the 28th and 2 30 and 7 30 on the 29th. Speakers include Rev H A Corey of Pittston Pa and Rev S W McGarvey of Johnstown. Missionaries present will be Rev James A Diehl of the Ching Tichetan Border Mission and Rev George Jennings of Argentine South America. Everyone is welcome to attend these services.
Tickets for the Red Cross dance on Thursday, March 31, are selling rapidly through the T A A Club, American Legion Post, and Red Cross chapter. A record crowd is expected as all agencies report strong support for the Community Nurse Fund with home made cakes and sweets to be sold at the event. Elizabeth High has been named community nurse with temporary headquarters at the Well Baby Clinic room. Contact Room 23 Hershey Inn or call 9 W to reach her.
A special Easter service will be observed on Easter morning March 27 at 10 30 by the Sunday School of Derry Presbyterian church with a full program of recitations songs poems and a pageant led by pastor Rev Ree o H. Taylor and featuring many children and the church choir.
The Male Glee Club from Lebanon Valley College performed at Central Theatre to a full house Tuesday evening. The concert, under the United Brethren Church group affiliation, drew an appreciative audience.
County Commissioners appoint six Planning Commissioners to oversee site selection architect selection and contract awards for a new Dauphin Courthouse. The board will meet soon and operate without pay, with Hershey expected to return from Cuba to participate. Building aims to start early next year or before year end.
The YWCA cafeteria hosted a St Patrick's party on March 17 with Misses Alma Houser Grace Hess and Lydia Weltmer as hostesses. The event featured contests games music dancing and generous refreshments with prizes won by Violet Behm Pearl Kilmer and Myra Ebersole and a long list of attendees.
Miss Effie Cooper daughter of Mr and Mrs William Cooper married Samuel Habecker son of Mr and Mrs Jacob F Habecker on Thursday March 17 at nine pm in the parsonage of the First United Brethren church Rev R R Butterwick officiated. The couple were unattended and will honeymoon to Baltimore Washington and Virginia before settling on East Derry Road.
Miss Mary Eby entertained the Senior Class members on Thursday evening March 17 at her home near Campbelltown. The guests enjoyed games dancing and music followed by refreshments for Charlotte Freyainges Carrie Koller Mittth McCafferty Esther Kapenshade Paul Gingrich Paul Saltzinger Samuel Dissinger Harry Wolfersberger Walter Hershey Sandra Garman Mary Eby June Eby and Mr and Mrs Eby.
