Winter Wheat Yield Forecast and Abandoned Acreage Figures
The Department of Agriculture forecasts about 572 million bushels of winter wheat for 1918 based on May 1 conditions, with 13.7 percent of autumn plantings abandoned mainly in Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Texas. Despite improved conditions in April, the report notes dry weather last autumn and spring as key abandonment drivers and emphasizes continued efforts for greater production and conservation to support both U.S. and allied needs in the war.
