Hog Pasture Feeding Shows Grain Still Needed for Hogs
Experiments reported by the Dauphin County Agricultural Extension Association show hogs fed on alfalfa with no grain nearly starve, while pasture systems reduce costs. Pasture-only pork Cost per 100 pounds ranged from 6.65 to 6.85 dollars, including labor and overhead. An average of 50 bushels of grain per 100 pounds of pork is cited in pasture systems, with dry-lot feeding requiring 500 to 550 pounds of grain per 100 pounds gain. An acre of corn can be hogged down by nine hogs in forty days, and multiple pastures prevent overgrazing.
