Hopewell's Rapid Rise From Pine Field to War Plant
Hopewell on the James River near City Point has transformed from bare fields to a sprawling munitions complex. Du Pont operates multi factory sites with 17,000 workers paid about $500,000 biweekly, under tight security with armed guards, permits, and restricted access. The town builds thousands of cottages for workers at about $1,400 each, plus a hotel and clubhouse as it expands housing and services for thousands more, while questions linger about land, output, and contracts.

Summer Fashion Notes: Silk Wear and Light Outer Garments
The excerpt describes sleeveless silk sweater coats as warm yet light, silk striped awnings for shirtwaists, a long black show attached to a high plaiting, delicate airy hats in pink white blue tan and gold, petticoats in flowered or white with floral ruffles, and summer gowns with minimal embroidery. It mentions pongee coats with detachable collars and cuffs, closing with lighter summer footwear featuring white tops and gray tops, and alternating lace trims on frocks and checked silks with dark silk coats as chic.
