Seager Wheeler the Hand Seed Warden of Wheat

Pioneer farmer Seager Wheeler, born on the Isle of Wight, emigrated to Saskatchewan in the eighties. He developed hand selection to breed high quality seed wheat, winning $1000 at the 1911 New York Land Show and multiple prizes through 1914, while improving yields from forty five to eighty bushels per acre on small plots and thirty to thirty five on large fields. He first cultivated Preston wheat, then refined it by removing red chaff and selecting for white grain, spikelet-rich heads, and vigorous plants to produce uniform, superior seed for reproduction and higher farm prosperity.

The article notes that stony loam soils aid heavy or clayey soils by improving water perviousness, but a stony soil does not guarantee productivity. For profitable apples amid keen competition the soil must be productive or capable of becoming productive and staying so, despite claims of advantages from stony hills.
